Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Her parents, however, didn't want her to pursue acting until she became older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry stated that she was too timid to perform in high school but began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her to California and she returned working on stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway as a couple in The Other Place, in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, she starred in an recurring role in The ABC drama about politics Scandal starring her father. The actress also portrayed her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The role was given an audition to the actress, even though she was a cousin to the role.
